Men's Invitational DMR: IU Gets NCAA Auto
Bloomington, IN - Indiana University's DMR team ran a World leading/NCAA auto time (sub 9:31.0) of 9:29.12. The time was also the 5th fastest DMR ever recorded indoors, the third fastest American indoor DMR, and tied for 4th fastest on the indoor collegiate list. De'Sean Turner led off the 1200 leg in 2:54.3, Chris Vaughn ran the 400 in 46.9, Daniel Stockberger the 800 in 1:51.0, and Andy Bayer anchored the 1600 in 3:56.9. They missed the World/collegiate record by 3.15 seconds, which is held by Texas University at 9:25.97. Except for the first 4 laps where IU's "B" team led Turner, they ran the whole race alone and well clear of the rest of the field.
After the race Bayer said, "It's kinda cool that we were pretty disappointed with the fifth fastest all-time. We wanted to go after the collegiate record. Each one of us probably needed another second or two ... It was good overall. I'm glad we hit the auto; that's really what mattered".
Talking about NCAAs Bayer also said, "I feel like with the squad we're at right now, we'll be in the mix of it the whole race. We'll be at the front when I get the baton at the end. So I think we have a really good shot to win a national title."
