Alan Webb Redeems Himself With a 1500m/5000m Double, Robby Andrews Opens With 1:49 Win

The fascinating career of American record holder in the mile Alan Webb continued Saturday night at the George Mason Invitational.

A week after opening his outdoor season last week with a very disappointing 1:54.17 800 and then doubling back with a 3:54.08 1500m that left us at LRC pondering if Alan Webb "was done", Webb had a much, much better performance Saturday night.

First up was the 1500m and Webb ran a 3:43.28 1500m (roughly a 4:01 mile) for 4th place. Then Webb doubled back in the 5000m to get the win in 14:15.54 over Sam Luff of Georgetown Running Company(who LRC's Rojo used to coach at Cornell).

With a hat tip to message board poster joecrunner, Webb, in 2010 when coming back from surgery, opened with a 1:52.32 800m. Two weeks later he completed a 3:41.16 1500m and 14:15 5000m double, winning both races. Two weeks after that Webb ran 3:36.21 in his last track race of the year (this was all in the fall so his season was shorter). This year's Webb's double wasn't as impressive as in 2010, but his subpar performance before the double was much worse, and his impressive double was only one week later.

With today's run Webb appears to be on track with a chance to qualify for the Olympic Trials.

Also running at George Mason was Webb's training partner, former NCAA champion Robby Andrews who was making his 2012 debut which was also his first race as a professional. Andrews ran 1:49.08 to get the win.

Results for Webb's and Andrews races below.
