US Men Finish 4th & Women 5th At 2012 World Half Marathon Championships

Shalane Flanagan Struggles For Women and Only Finishes 25th

Led by sub 63:00 clockings and top 20 showings by Augustus Maiyo (62:33 - 15th) and Luke Puskedra (62:46 - 17th), the US Men finished fourth at the 2012 world half marathon championships today in Bulgaria. Despite the US men's 4th place finish, they weren't close to earning the bronze in the medal as the third and final scoring member for third place Ethiopia was just one spot behind Maiyo.

Puskedra and Maiyo ran close together throughout as just 1-second sepearated them at 5k (14:25 Maiyo, 14:26 Puskedra), 10k (29:10 Puskedra, 29:11 Maiyo), and 15k (44:02 Puskedra, 44:03 Maiyo).

On the women's side of things, American star Shalane Flanagan  who was hyped as the one non-African who might be able to contend, really struggled and was only third on the US team as she was just 25th in 74:41 as the US women finished 5th. At 5km, Flanagan was already 16 seconds off the lead but was in 10th place at that time (Flanagan's 5k time was 16:29 which is 69:33 pace). She'd slowly fade back as the race progressed as she was 14th at 10k, 16th at 15k, and 24th at 20k.
