Course Records Fall as Ben True Outkicks Sam Chelanga For BAA 5k Title As Werknesh Kidane Wins Women's Race
2011 Boston Marathon Runner-up Desi Davila Only 10th In Women's Race
By Tom Davis & Jess Barton
April 15, 2012
Boston, MA - The fourth annual BAA 5k took place this morning in Copley Square. The men's race, which served as the first race in the inaugural distance medley series, was won by defending champion Ben True in a record time of 13:41.
After a good sized group of around eight runners pushed the pace together for the majority of the race, there was a sprint to the line and True narrowly pulled away from Sam Chelenga, who finished in second in 13:43. Lani Rutto of Kenya rounded out the podium in a time of 13:46. Chelenga is planning on competing in the distance medley event, so his time sets him up well going into the next two events.
True was pleased with his effort, especially since he was injured with a pulled calf muscle for much of the winter. True's last race was at the Melbourne Track Classic at the beginning of March, where he ran 13:26 for third place. True spent some time training in Australia around that race and then returned to Hanover for some "really hard" training to get in shape for the 10k. At this point True is unsure of whether he will aim for the 5k or the 10k at the Olympic Trials. He is currently training for both and will be running the 10k at the Peyton Jordan Invite at the end of the month.
Peyton Jordan will be True's second ever 10k on the track, "I've only done one 10k on the track before and it was a horrible experience, so we're gonna see how this one goes," said True, who only ran 28:16.65 in his 10k debut last May 1st. " True did not exactly go into that 10k under ideal conditions though, "I went in a little over trained and a bit under the weather, I was sick. It was a suffer fest getting around that track," said True.
True, who was training under Tim Broe in the now defunct In the Arena Track Club in Hanover, NH, is still coached by Broe, although Broe has moved to Ann Arbor. True now works with both Broe and Dartmouth women's coach Mark Coogan. According to True, Coogan is "someone I see everyday, someone who can make last minute adjustments to workouts." The current arrangement seems to be working well, "Between Tim and Mark I'm having a good support system," said True.
Women's Race - Kidane Wins/Davila Only 10th
The women's race played
out quite differently than the men's race, with Kim Smith, Aheza Kiros,
and eventual winner Werknesh Kidane dueling it out until the final
minutes of the race. Kidane, the wife of Gebregziabher
Gebremariam, crossed the line in 15:12, in the process shattering the
previous course record of 15:51. Kiros finished in second in 15:21 and
Smith was third in 15:26.
One of the surprises of the day was the absence of 2011 Boston Marathon runner-up Desiree Davila from the front of the race. Davila finished the race a distant 10th place in 16:03. Davila was hoping to run better, but she remained upbeat and is looking ahead to watching the marathon tomorrow. Davila will be spectating from the press truck where she will be consulted with from time to time on how the race is playing out. While much of her attention will be given to that task, Davila admitted that she is especially looking forward to riding the press truck so that she can scout out some of her competition for the Olympics and so that she can better learn the Boston course for future years.
"It will be fun to be out there, but it's gonna be a lot of analyzing," said Davila. "I just consider myself a student of the sport so I'm gonna be looking for things out there. I'm probably not gonna do the best job for the press truck, but for me I'm gonna be taking everything in," she joked. "That's what it's gonna be all about out there, eyeing up the competition for LondonÂ…but also for when I come back again," said Davila, who seemed like she was really excited to some day put on another great show for the crowds in Boston.
After last year's Boston Marathon, Davila was thrust into the spotlight and when asked about how that feels, she said, "I will probably never be used to that." She said she was even thinking about the marathon finish as she was coming down the straightaway at the end of the 5k today, "even running down that final stretch, I was like, 'how do you time this right?'" said Davila. "I was thinking about how do you run this final stretch in the marathon, how do you run it right? I don't know if I quite got it today, even in the 5k. I'm sure that Monday on the truck I'll be thinking about that too," said Davila, who narrowly missed winning the 2011 Boston Marathon in a sprint to the finish.
The top 50 results for the BAA 5k which include the top 13 female finishers appear below. Below that the top 10 men and women are listed separately.
