A Fan's Guide To Day 2 Of The 2010 USA Track And Field Championships

By LetsRun.com
June 25, 2010

To help you follow the 2010 USA Track and Field championships, we have created the following preview for you. We preview all of the distance events - 800 and up - and tell you when they'll take place. We also give you our predictions. Our Day 1 preview was more exhaustive than this one but we figured a short preview was better than none at all.

We realize we forgot to mention the women's steeplechase yesterday. That wasn't intentional but since the top two US steeplers aren't running it in Jenny Barringer and Anna Pierce, please excuse us for forgetting it. We'll mention it today.

Friday's Distance Events (Not counting Juniors)- All Times Listed are Central
4:15 Men's Steeple Prelims
6:25 Men's 1500 Prelims
7:15 Women's 800 Semis
7:30 Men's 800 Semis
8:14 Women's 5,000 Final
8:35 Men's 5,000 Final
Note: Robby Andrews runs in the junior 800 final at 1:40 pm.

Women's Steeple
Lisa Aguilera, Bridget Franek and Nicole Bush are the class of the field.....

LRC Prediction: 1) Bush 2)  Franek 3) Aguilera Based on what they've run so far this year, we think Bush is the least likely to win btut we feel like she deserves it after what happened to her in the past at USAs after they had the barrier at the wrong height and she broke her foot.

Men's Steeple
Dan Huling has run 8:14 and may get the American record later in the year. We think he'll win. The question is who gets 2nd and third. Steve Slattery is resurgent this year. At the adidas meet, Huling was the top American, Slattery was 2nd and Ben Bruce was third. But 2007 and 2009 champ Josh McAdams also should be in the mix and might even win as he did win last year. However, McAdams has only run once all year. He won a steeple in 8:47 in early June so we don't know if he's just holding back or if there is something going on. Olympic steeplechaser Anthony Famiglietti also is entered. He only ran 8:30 at USAs but can't be discounted.

LRC Prediction: 1) Huling 2) Famiglietti 3) Bruce

Men's 1,500
Leonel Manzano will get the win as Lopez Lomong isn't in equal form so far this yaer, although he has run 3:35.77 which is #3 in the US . Look for Lomong, David Torrence, Will Leer, Rob Myers, and Russell Brown to battle it out for 2nd. It will be interesting to see how the 5,000 guys like Matt Tegenkamp and Evan Jager fit into things her as well as NCAA runner-up AJ Acosta.

LRC Prediction: 1) Manzano 2) Torrence 3) Lomong

800 Semis
All of the big names advanced from yesterday. If you want our breakdown of the event before it started, see our Day 1 preview. The only big news was the Khadevis Robinson didn't start on the men's side.

5,000 Women
This race might be the race of the meet in terms of mid-d and distance action. It's fantastic as it features 1,500 stars Jenny Barringer and Shannon Rowbury as well as Olympic 10k bronze medallist Shalane Flanagan. Flanagan and Rowbury are both doing the 1,500/5k double so they may be a little tired from the first round of the 1,500s yesterday

Thus the edge should go to Barringer. Barringer should win and she' only been lightly raced so far so there is no fear of burnout. But for us, the jury still isn't out on whether it was wise for Barringer to switch coaches and we don't like how she's been starting the year working on shorter races like the 1,500. Last year in our mind, she had great surprising success at 1,500 because she worked on her endurance first.

Molly Huddle and Jen Rhines also should be in the mix.

We guess we'll go with an upset pick and pick Rowbury to win in a kick.  That would be a huge upset as only 7% of LRC visitors are picking her.

LRC Prediction: 1) Rowbury 2) Barringer 3) Flanagan

5,000 Men
American record holder Bernard Lagat will win as 12:56 man Chris Solinskey isn't running USAs? Where the heck is he? We have no idea. 12:56 man Dathan Rizenhein also isn't running. Heck, most of the top guys on the 2010 US list aren't running it as 13:18 performer Bobby Curtis is a scratch as well. Thus after Lagat, who has 12:54, the next fastest guy in 2010 in the US is Brent Vaugh who has run 13:26.

Tim Nelson ran 27:31 earlier this year for 10,000 and 13:24 for last year so he probably is the 2nd best guy in this race but we're not sure how he'll do if the pace is slow. Bolota Asmerson also ran 13:24 last year but hasn't broken 13:40 this year.

Former CU Buff Brent Vaughn is in the race. He' run 13:18 in the past and seems to be coming into good form as he was 4th in the Bolder Boulder 10k.

LRC Prediction 1) Lagat 2) Nelson 3) Vaughn
