GREAT SOUTH RUN FEATURES VERY STRONG FIELDS

Sunday's Bupa Great South Run, Britain's top 10 mile road race with a course stretching from Southsea to Portsmouth, will feature strong fields, despite losing two marquis athletes.

"We did have Zersenay Tadese and Jo Pavey but both have withdrawn," said the event's elite athletes manager Peter Riley in an e-mail message to Race Results Weekly.  "Tadese with injury and Jo with the flu."

Headlining the men's field with be reigning IAAF World Cross Country Champion Joseph Ebuya of Kenya.  His key challengers will be two-time world steeplechase champion Saif Saeed Shaheen of Qatar, reigning European marathon champion Viktor Röthlin of Switzerland, and 2010 European Championships bronze medalist at 5000m Daniele Meucci of Italy.

Kenya's Grace Momanyi, the 2010 Commonwealth Games 10,000m champion, appears to be the strongest woman in the race.  She will need to be at her best to hold off road racing star Aniko Kalovics of Hungary, 2010 European Championships 5000m bronze medallist Sara Moreira of Portugal, 2010 European Championships marathon bronze medalist Anna Incerti of Italy, and 2010 Great Ireland Run champion Freya Murray.  Romania's Constantina Dita, the 2008 Olympic Marathon champion, and Britain's Steph Twell, the 2010 Commonwealth Games 1500m bronze medalist will also take part.

The course records are 45:56 for the men, by the late Kenyan Benson Masya in 1995, and 51:00 for the women, by Irishwoman Sonia O'Sullivan in 2002.  Last year's race had 13,661 official finishers.
