4:45 PM - Women's 800 - 1st Round: The Start Of A Great Event
Once again USATF has idiotically set up the heats in the 800. We complained about this two years ago at the Olympic Trials, but they apparently don't listen. Thursday's action is the first of three rounds of the 800. For the women, there will be 31 women in the women's 800 and for the men there will be 29. You think given those numbers they'd have four heats of 7 or 8 and let the athletes start in lanes, as all elite level 800s should start in lanes in our book. Instead,
they will run three heats with 9, 10 or 11 in each heat.
Ridiculous. For the record. USATF, please do yourself a favor and let in 32 athletes each year for the 800 and put them in four heats of 8.
Anyway, the women's 800 is one of the more loaded events in the meet. The event features four women with qualifying times under 2:00 - Maggie Vessey (1:57.84), Christin Wurth (1:59.35), Alysia Johnson (1:59.60), and Hazel Clark (1:59.96). Plus the field also includes the NCAA champ from 2008 and 2009 in Geena Gall, the 2010 NCAA champ in Phoebe Wright, 2008 US Olympian Alice Schmidt and 2:00.01 performer Morgan Uceny. One of those women will win. The question is who?
And that is why this event is worth watching.
It should be noted that Wurth is attempting the 800/1,500 double. The first round of the 1,500 is one hour and five minutes after the 800 first round. The 1,500 final is on Saturday - a day when there are no rounds of the 800.
It also is worth noting that - despite all of the publicity that others brought to the event last year - it was the veteran Clark who was the US champion last year. In fact, Clark has won USAs two years in a row and five times in her career.
Predictions: We'll wait until the final to make a firm prediction. We'd go with Johnson if we knew what was up with her, but this is her first outdoor 800 of the year. It's hard to imagine Vessey getting the tactics right to win it, although over 60% of the LetsRun.com visitors are picking her to win and Wurth isn't really an 800 runner in our minds. That would leave us with Clark, whom we just can't imagine would win yet again.
LRC Prediction: 1) Johnson 2) Vessey 3) Wurth
This year's entrants and last year's results appear below.

5:05 PM 800 Men - 1st Round - The Start Of The Nick Symmonds Show
Seeing the entrants for the men's 800 is a bit depressing, as this event could have been the event of the championships. Unfortunately, 2010 NCAA outdoor 800 and 1,500 champ Andrew Wheating isn't running USAs this year. Wheating's rival in freshman phenom Robby Andrews is running USAs - but only the junior meet as he wants to go the world juniors.
So what does that leave us? It leaves us with Nick Symmonds. He's in fantastic form and will win. The question is who gets second. The leading contenders are LetsRun.com favorite Khadevis Robinson, who ran 1:45 at the adidas Grand Prix in New York, and Duane Solomon, who ran 1:45 on June 12th in Indianapolis. They both are in form and have credentials behind them. The other guys who have run 1:45 this year are Cory Primm of UCLA and Karjuan Williams of UCLA.
LRC Prediction: 1) Symmonds 2) Robinson 3) Solomon

5:50 PM - Women's 1,500 - A Race For the Ages - Rowbury, Wurth Or Pierce?
We will barely bother to criticize USATF for only accepting 20 people into the women's 1,500 when they clearly should let at least 12 run per heat. That is old news, just as it is with the 800.
Even more so than the women's 800, the women's 1,500 is one of the better events in the championships. It's worth the price of admission alone!!!
Last year, three USA women broke 4:00 for 1,500 (Jenny Barringer, Anna Pierce and Christin Wurth) and a fourth ended up with the bronze at the World Championships (Shannon Rowbury). Three of the four are running the 1,500 this week, as Barringer has opted for the 5,000 of all events. Also in the field are 2008 Olympian Erin Donohue as well as 2008 Olympic 10k bronze medallist Shalane Flanagan. Flanagan, who is now trained by Jerry Schumacher of Nike, is clearly going for the Galen Rupp/Nike training plan of racing under-distance as she prepares for her marathon debut this fall. Three-time US champion Treniere Moser (Clement) is also in the field, as is former NCAA champ Sarah Bowman.
But let's be honest, this race is going to be won by one of the sub-4 women in Pierce or Wurth or the bronze medallist Rowbury. Since Wurth is doubling, most people are discounting her chances, including us. That leaves us Pierce or Rowbury. The LetsRun.com visitors are giving the edge to Pierce over Rowbury, 49.7% to 44%, but we don't understand why. Rowbury is the bronze medallist and Rowbury won last year. Thus it's disrespectful
not to say she is the favorite until she is beaten.
LetsRun.com Prediction: 1) Rowbury 2) Pierce 3) Wurth
Editor's Addition: It's just been pointed out to us that Rowbury is also entered in the 5,000. Thus Pierce is the only one fresh. As a result, we'll switch our picks to Pierce, Rowbury, Wurth.

8:20 PM - Women's 10,000 Final: Lisa Koll Or Amy Begley?
Now this race will certainly be one to excite the crowd, as the Des Moines fans will be cheering madly for Iowa State's Lisa Koll. She will be challenged by Olympian Amy Begley. Unfortunately for the fans in Des Moines, as good as Koll is, Begley is even better. It needs to be remembered that Begley stunned the Olympic medallist Flanagan to win the 10k last year at USAs and then went on to get 6th at the World Champs. Begley's PRs also are better than Koll's and Begley is in good
form. Begley PRed in the 10k the last time she ran it (31:13 at Worlds) and she PRed in the 5,000 earlier this year (15:05). For comparison's sake, Koll has run 31:18 and 15:17 this year.
Even if Koll had the better PRs, we'd have to go with Begley, as she's more experienced and used to racing at the elite level, whereas Koll is used to running away from people. The battle for third should come down to Katie McGregor, Amy Hastings and Desiree Davila. Davila ran 32:06 to Hastings' 32:30 at Stanford, so she's the favorite for 3rd, although the veteran McGregor can't be discounted.
LRC Prediction: 1) Begley 2) Koll 3) Davila

8:50 PM - Men's 10,000 Final - The Galen Rupp Show
Galen Rupp earned his first USATF outdoor title last year at USAs. We fully expect him to repeat, as he's run the #2 time in the history of the country already this year at 27:10. The next best entry mark is 28:00 for New Balance's Fasil Bizuneh, as 27:30 guys Tim Nelson and Bobby Curtis are running the 5,000. Bizuneh has been doing road races so far this year, so we don't expect him to amaze. Last year's 4th placer in James Carney is entered but he's coming off an April
marathon (2:15:50).
As a result, the battle for second may come to former 27-minute guys Scott Bauhs and Ed Moran. Bauhs has run 13:29 this spring and is a former 27:48 guy and Moran ran 13:29 on June 11th and is a former 27:43 guy. Between the two, Moran gets the edge in our book, as his 13:29 was on June 11th whereas Bauhs ran his in April.
Prediction: 1) Rupp 2) Moran 3) ??? Bauhs?
