The Abilene 800 and The Birth of American Women's Distance Running

60 years ago today, a group of American women descended upon Abilene, Tex., for the US Olympic Trials to prove their event belonged. This is the story of those women, from the 16-year-old American record holder who had been abused as a child to the 49-year-old Olympic 100m champion.
