Jane Hedengren Shatters High School 5,000m Record with Stunning 14:57.93

US high school phenom Jane Hedengren’s remarkable senior season reached another stratosphere as she obliterated the national high school girls’ 5,000m record at the Bryan Clay Invite clocking 14:57.93 to finish third, won by NCAA cross country runner-up Pamela Kosgei of New Mexico  (14:52.45) with BYU’s Lexy Halladay-Lowry (14:52.93) in second.

Prior to this year, the high school record was 15:25.27, set by Elizabeth Leachman at the 2024 Texas Relays (Hedengren broke that indoors running 15:13 at Nike Nationals).  Hedengren’s record is now nearly 28 seconds faster.

Jane Hedengren Shatters High School 5,000m Record with Stunning 14:57.93 Jane Hedengren Leads the 5000

In a race with the Wavelight technology pacing lights set at 15:00, Hedengren, the 18-year-old BYU commit, showed tremendous poise racing some of the best in the NCAA. When the rabbit dropped out at 2600, it was Hedengren who led the entire race until 800m to go. Halladay-Lowry and Kosgei started to separate by the bell, and were clearly best on the final lap, but Hedengren’s run was one for the ages.

Just a little perspective on how good Hedengren’s run was. Until the last school year, a US collegian had never gone sub 15:00 until Parker Valby did it. In last night’s race, Kosgei and Halladay-Lowry nearly broke Valby’s collegiate record of 14:52.18 and Hedengren wasn’t too far behind.

There is a great thread here on our discussion forums, where people try and put Hedengren’s run in perspective.
