Walnut, CA (March 5, 2025) – What does a 10,000-meter track race have in common with the woolly mammoth and the dodo?
Nothing, if Des Linden and Kara Goucher have anything to say about it.
And they do: Announced today, their “Save the 10,000 with Des & Kara” on Saturday, May 3, will provide 60 athletes, U.S. and international, a rare chance to chase qualifying standards for the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships and the 2025 World Athletics Championships. The event is a Bronze Label race on the World Athletics Continental Tour.
The races – one each for men and women, capped at 30 participants in each – will be held under the lights at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California. A prize purse of $25,000, with $5,000 for each winner, will be awarded.
Hosts of the popular “Nobody Asked Us” podcast, the duo – long concerned about the dwindling number of 10,000-meter races on the world’s calendar – say they were spurred into action when they learned that the Night of 10,000 PBs in London would pause this year, just on the heels of two thrilling 10,000-meter races at the 2024 Olympics.
“Des and I are so excited to host our first elite racing event,” said Goucher, a two-time Olympian and the first American woman to win a World Championships medal in the 10,000 meters when she took silver in 2007. “Last year in Paris, the men’s 10,000 got the Olympic Games off to a tremendous start. The interest in that race pulled fans to come back day after day to follow the action. Des and I are eager to give athletes the chance to continue to race the 10,000 because, even though the discipline is often overlooked, we think it’s one of track’s most compelling events.”
“There are only a couple of high-caliber 10,000s available each year in this country,” said Linden, also a two-time Olympian who in 2018 became the first American woman to win the Boston Marathon in 33 years. “If Americans are going to remain motivated and competitive, they need more chances to run. We could wring our hands, or we could try to do something about it. It’s important to both of us that we give something back to this sport.”
Entry into the events will be automatic for athletes with personal bests of at least 28:30 (men) and 33:30 (women), with any remaining spots being filled on a descending-order basis.
Earlier in the day on May 3, meet organizers Linden and Goucher will host a live recording of “Nobody Asked Us,” with all proceeds going toward the event.
Runners and fans everywhere can also show their support by joining the Save the 10,000 Virtual Run, with details and entry available at www.savethe10000.com. Sponsors, ticket information and further details will be announced soon.
