Armory Indoor Track in New York City Letting High Schoolers Get Verified Marks on October 3rd

NEW YORK, NY, August 25, 2020 – The Armory Trials, featuring time trials and field measurements for high school track & field student-athletes, will start on October 3rd at The Armory New Balance Track & Field Center, announced The Armory Foundation.

With all spring and many fall sports seasons cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19, high school track & field and cross-country participants, especially rising seniors, can benefit greatly from receiving Fully Automatic Time (FAT) and verified field event recordings to assist in college recruiting.

“One second or one inch may seem minuscule to many,” said Bassett Thompson, The Armory’s Director of Track Field, “but in the world of track and field there are so little margins that can determine whether a track scholarship is in a high school athlete’s future.

“Unlike other sports, college track & field coaches do not even have to be present in the recruiting process. A great performance, especially from a reputable venue, can travel fast and far. Immediately after a special time or special performance, the entire world knows about it.”

The Armory Trials will officially clock runners in individual social-distance settings with its state-of-the-art timing system used for all its meets, including the famed NYRR Millrose Games. Student-athletes will be timed on The Armory’s 200-meter banked track – recognized as the Fastest Track in the World – as well as verified recordings in field events.

Events to be recorded include 55-meter, 55m hurdles, 200m, 400m, 800m, long jump, triple jump, shot put and weight throw.

Evaluating talent and skill level of high school track & field athletes is relatively simple – a college coach principally needs a verifiable “mark” or performance result, which is very different from nearly every other sport.

With the cancelation of track last spring, The Armory wants to provide high school students with opportunities to set a new “mark” by or before early November, when it would be critical for many students’ college admittance and scholarship opportunities

“We are excited to extend this opportunity to high school student-athletes that is custom-built for our challenging times,” said Jonathan Schindel, Co-President of The Armory Foundation. “This is ideal for high school students whose goals and dreams are taking their track & field careers to the next level. This is The Armory’s way to help them increase and showcase their credentials to college coaches during this extremely unique time in our lives.”

The Armory will host a handful of Armory Trials this fall, beginning on Saturday, October 3. The trials will start at 9 a.m. Future dates will be announced soon.

The Armory is following strict COVID-19 guidelines and is limiting the number of individual registrations.
