Oregon’s Edward Cheserek and Eric Jenkins finished 1-2 in the men’s 10,000m before 9,627 hometown fans in what many would have expected to be a joyous occasion for the two Oregon Ducks. They had secured maximum points for the Ducks and helped them immensely in the team title hunt.
Jenkins had led coming into the final straight, Cheserek came by him, Jenkins appeared to attempt to catch back up and Cheserek made sure he finished in front. Neither guy was going all out.
Neither Jenkins nor Cheserek acted like it was a joyous occasion for the Ducks. The two had very little interaction at the finish except for a pat from Cheserek towards Jenkins. Immediately, the chatter began was Jenkins upset with Cheserek? Or as this thread said it, “Eric Jenkins pissed off at Ches?”
Jenkins did not use those words but indicated there was talk of the two Ducks finishing together but obviously in the competitive moment it did not happen. Jenkins said he did not consider this a loss and said his focus will be on the 5k. He acknowledged the rivalry with his teammate Cheserek.
They went 1-2 at NCAA cross where Cheserek was clearly best. At the NCAA indoor 3000m Jenkins won, but afterwards Cheserek said he ‘let him take it.’
Joint interview below and then a solo one with Jenkins. Quotes coming.
