No sub-17, no black page.
PS. Plus he downplayed how he was going for the WR. WIth those weather conditions, of course he was going for it.
Sub 14**. and Course** record (not world).
Very much wrong take. In the past (his first WS when he ended up on the highway, and the following year when he DNFd with GI issues) his goal was primarily a new course record, not just a win. In the time since his focus shifted. This year (and last) yes, he was interested in the course record, and ideally by a significant margin both times, but he was more interested in the win. To beat a very dead horse, the longer the race the more that can go wrong, especially on trails (even though it was a cool year, high temps on the course were still in the 80s), etc. It was clear to any astute follower that he was interested in the CR, but yes, relative to proclamations of his in prior years, the win (leaving as a repeat winner) was more important. His first year, it seemed it was huge course record, or screw it. A podium finish didn't seem important to him then.
