I remember when getting more than a horrible looking shirt was a big deal. They they have goodie bags and all sorts of other nonsense now.

I’m sure it also costs more now for the city to close your race route due to more participants, slower participants, increased insurance costs, etc.

A road race is basically nothing more than a parade, at least that’s how it used to be. You needed a parade permit.
