In the end this could just put them in worse bind. Not paying someone who otherwise "earned" money should they get a $$$ place is worse optics then quietly just denying them a start spot.

No, they didn't "earn" the prize money. They broke the rules. Why would someone pretend to be a woman if they knew there was a 100% chance they would be disqualified?
