I love the way Letsrun slates guys like McCandless for ducking competition to make a few bucks, the guy isn't making a ton of money from the sport but so that money may be more important to him in sustaining his enviroment and mounting a challenge for Tokyo than finishing 17th in Houston. You gotta do what it takes to achieve the dream man, if you think any of those 2:12 guys are in it just to make money, you are deluded but they got to do what they got to do to make the dream happen, that might mean picking a smaller road race with easier money but all they are doing is trying to support their expenses and that's it.

And yes they are pros, a pro is anyone who is a full-time athlete and supporting their living off the sport. It's not your definition of a time or what competition they face. Yuki Kawuchi ran 2:08 and won the Boston marathon while he was an amateur.
