DC has really changed in the past 20 years. I've lived here nearly my whole life. I agree, 20 years ago, that area was very sketchy. Now? As a petite female runner, I wouldn't think twice about running there at 8 pm.

Honestly, I don't think she could have done anything to prevent this, except not be there. I can't imagine being quick enough to use pepper spray or something similar in a case like this. There were people all around - a running partner would not have prevented this.
