The real craziest thing about this run was the fact that he ran completely alone for 17k, and his two trusted pace setters fell off the pace at 15k after some rather awful splits in the early portion of the race. The focus Kipchoge has is unreal. He was waving and yelling to pacesetters, orchestrating his own race, and I believe I recall seeing the kilometer after the last pacesetter stepped off was a 2:49. His race sense is incredible. He really got it done today. No drafting, no multi-million dollar scientific budget. Just dirt roads in Kenya, years of consistency, and incredible mindfulness. Seeing how happy he was coming across the finish line was a great reminder of why I love this sport. What an unreal performance. All of us scrubs can no longer use the "oh there wasn't good competition" excuse anymore.
He's an absolute best, not just physically, but also mentally.
