Good info, thanks. I’ve taken to carrying spray even here in the Blue Ridge. I think the dog factor is essential, especially where you are. Every time I’ve been visiting remote areas in the Rockies (CO/WY), I always have cats on my mind - can’t totally enjoy my surroundings without my dog. Yeah, paranoid.
Back in the 70s, I swear I heard a cat on the Appalachian Trail at night, in the winter, in NW New Jersey. I recently had it confirmed by a former NJ farm owner from the High Point area. They say they’ll be plentiful east of the Mississippi by 2030.
