The first time I went fastpacking was about 100 miles through a portion of the PCT in fall in southern California. My mileage doubled real quick after the first day as fresh cougar prints we're going both directions in the sandy trails. I didn't notice then until night fell and the headlamp illuminated the paw prints. After reading this story I too will considering carrying a fixed blade knife and maybe some firecrackers to light if need be.
