RE: The elites clothing choices in Boston perplexed me
I wore a synthetic t-shirt under a singlet up top with wool arm sleeves, synthetic wind gloves and thigh-length tights with compression socks. The arms were the only thing that was reasonably warm. At least when both shirts were swamped it blocked the wind but my quads were too cold to work after every downpour I struggled to get back above easy pace.
If I had to do it again I'd go for a wool base layer under the singlet and wool gloves and a windproof vest. I had cut an emergency square of mylar to block wind and i should have tucked it under my tights/over my quads. Probably better to have worn shorts and smeared my quads in tons of Vaseline. Also ditched my throwaway rain jacket at the start and never got properly warm.
Lessons learned. But important to remember, at the start it just wasn't that bad compared to how it would get. And no one was quite sure if they were wearing enough or too much.
