RE: The elites clothing choices in Boston perplexed me
Here's what I think some on this thread don't realize. The difference between an elite marathoner and an elite cyclist is huge. Even comparing most skinny runners to an elite runner and the elite looks like a twig. There is just no extra body mass there. As someone who was not world class but an OT qualifier and had a very small frame at that point I was way more perceptable to the cold than I was when I was a little bigger but still skinny in college.
The cold was brutal on me especially when wet. I knew guys at my level who got hypothermia on wet days racing when it was close to 50F. Sounds ridiculous but when you have less than 5% body fat and not much extra muscle, especially upper body you are extremely sensitive to the cold. Even on race day when going all out.
I did a half when there was ice on the ground and temps were around 30F. I know this is not an accurate comparison to what Boston was yesterday but I was brutally cold. I never was able to warm up at all during the race.
