Plenty of up and coming coaches would've jumped at this opportunity and done well with it - instead UMass made a massive blunder and interviewed people who were never taking the job and only using it for a raise or leverage in their current job. In this case aiming lower would've been the right thing to do and they could've gotten a very good coach to start the transition now rather than kicking the can further down the road. Hopefully they figure this out before they try to hire again next time.
