I was a D1 track athlete and my son was a D1 All-American and is now a college track coach, so track is a big deal to us. But track is more laid back than football or basketball. I didn't think the article was that inaccurate or insulting.
I agree with you here. If you go to a high school invitational you'll find at least half the athletes goofing around before/after their event. This is in contrast to football, where these athletes are forced to stand on the sideline and watch the whole game. I'm not surprised that the author, with little background in the sport, made some dubious assumptions and logic leaps after observing that. But it's also kind of ridiculous for a reader to be so indignant that they think the author's goal of writing this piece was to insult a bunch of teenagers.
