Competitive level wrote:
It might be a training block, but it's still a race. You being a coach should know that these elite athletes have a competitive edge beyond most which is why they are elite. I doubt that Rupp is coming from Portland, Or to Manchester, Ct just to run a "glorified" tempo. There will be a race!
$4k might not be a lot to Rupp, but there are others who want that money. There will be a race!
Unless of course, you believe Rupp likes to lose.
Nonsense, elites run races out of season all the time that they specifically say they just ran it as a tempo or tune up and didn't push, or if they did push, they are well outside of peak fitness.
Some examples would be
- Usain Bolt's entire season every year up until trials
- Rupp's qualifying half marathon last year, when he stated it was controlled (granted, he won by like 10 minutes)
- Mo losing xc world's last year
My point is that this might be a great race, but "track coach" has a valid point, and you outed yourself as the one who isn't very knowledgeable. It isnt elites desire to compete that makes them elite, there are plenty of mid pack runners who are just as competitive. And to be more than elite, but a champion, you have to know when to push and when to back off.
