It's not douchy at all. Sit from the start and see where people string out. If the pace isn't hot for you make a move. If no one comes just TT it. If they respond race accordingly.

My biggest issue with road races is that you often don't know the competition. I've been burned a few times by guys that I didn't think had the goods so I've learned to sit and wait. That said be cognizant; if you're on pace for a 16:45 and you're in 14 minute shape, you probably shouldn't be drafting off the kid in the local high school cross country team shirt.
