I'm pretty sure Bekele could run 26:55-27:10 at the moment. See how at the drinks stations in Berlin Kipsang would open massive gaps, but Bekele would quickly run these gaps down and Kipsang was running at sub-3k pace.
27:10 is 53 seconds slower than his WR.
If Bekele is in 27:10 shape at the same time as 2:03:03, then what could he have run for marathon back when he ran 26:17?
Do people here think that you can get a minute slower at 10K and still run a PB marathon? If not, you'll have to say that Bekele could have run low 2:02 or 2:01 back in the day.
I have no idea what it's like running at that level, or even how 10K shape differs from marathon shape firsthand. But to nearly run a marathon WR while being 53 sec slower at 10K seems a little crazy.
Maybe someone here who has run a fast marathon and 10K can share.[/quote]
Tergat has said that when he broke the marathon WR he would not have been able to break 27.30.
Also KB has said that marathon training is completely different than 10k training for him. He went from high intensity/moderate mileage to up to 250 km at 4 min/km which he found incredibly boring but necessary.
