Ok, here's the premise: actors have a Bacon number, which is the number of movie co-credits it takes to get to Kevin Bacon. For example, Steve Jobs has a Bacon number of 2. He was in a movie with Tom Hanks, and Tom Hanks was in a movie with Kevin Bacon. Mathematicians have an Erdos number, based on number of links to co-publishing with the Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdos.
So anyone who raced against Prefontaine has a Prefontaine number of 1. Anyone who raced against them has a Prefontaine number of 2.
Since I'm making this up, I get to make the rules.
#1: links have to occur in track races. Running with 40,000 people in the Chicago marathon doesn't count.
#2: since it's hard for women to have a low Prefontaine number, they can alternatively refer to their Lynn Jennings number.
I'm still trying to figure out what my Prefontaine number is. My best link may be through Bob Kennedy, but I don't know how to get back to Prefontaine. Any help?
Mine is 2. My wife's father raced against Pre in XC nationals. I think he only lost to him by 132ish spots. Not sure the year.
