RE: What's your Prefontaine number?
In 1975 I ran an indoor mile race against Mike Boit when he was a student at Eastern New Mexico University. Mike Boit was 3rd against Dave Wottle in the 1972 Olympics. Dave Wottle raced Steve Prefontaine twice. That means that my number is three.

When I raced Boit it was on an indoor banked board track which I believe was 11 laps per mile. It was a slow sit-and-kick type of race with a lot of hard-core jostling. I finished 6th out of 8, and should note that 2 runners were bounced off of the track during the jostling. During the race I made a point of turning around and looking at him running behind me just because it was such a unique experience.

Note: Mike Boit was the only one to make the '72 Olympic finals in both the 800 and 1500 where he finished 3rd and 4th respectively. He also has run the fastest mile ever, 3:28.36. It was in a downhill road race.
