RE: What's your Prefontaine number?
Much easier if cross country/road races could count, but using only track results, I've found:

I beat a guy who guy who has beaten a guy who has beaten Galen Rupp on the track, so that gives me a Rupp number of 3 (I rather doubt I've beaten anyone on the track who has also beaten Rupp there).

Now, Rupp has beaten Kenenisa Bekele (2012 Olympics), and at this point it's relatively easy to find some link, but no guarantee it will be the best one. Bekele has beaten Geb (so my Geb number is 5), but there's not a really strong connection between late 70s-early 80s distance runners and late 80s-early 90s runners, since most of the top guys in 1980 were at the end of their careers.

Geb beat Dieter Baumann, who beat Hansjorg Kunze, who beat Mohamed Kedir, who beat Lasse Viren, who beat Pre. Seems like Geb should have a better Pre number than 5, but it's a bit tricky to find results except for major championships back then.

So my Pre number is (at most) 10.
