Did Rupp underperform or did Ward outperform. I would have expected the time differential between the two of them yo have been bigger. Given that neither of them won the race, their respective times can be considered maximal effort. I don't think Rupp blew up that badly either. Is the takeaway that Rupp isn't that good after all, or is Ward better than we think he is?
Is Kipchoge only 2:46 better than Ward? Is Ward a sub-2:06 marathoner?
Until Kipchoge made a move, the pace was optimal for Ward, too slow for Kipchoge and Rupp.
I think the takeaway is that Kipchoge is the best marathoner in the world, Rupp is now a marathon runner and can contend at WMM events and Ward is better than most people gave him credit for.
