RE: Rupp is NOT a medal contender, NOT
Meb's silver in Athens was a surprise then, but given his absolute proven consistency over 26.2 miles, it's safe to assume that any race within a 2:10-2:13 pace, Meb will be there.
Meb didn't debut in a US only race with B listers. He ran NYC in '02 in 2:12.x for 9th. In '04 Chicago he ran 2:10.x for 7th. Culpepper had run 2:09.x the year before at Chicago. Culpepper won the '04 trials with Meb 2nd.
Nobody considered what we then knew of Meb over 42km to be a contender, but we did have multiple marathons to assess him by. He was even then incredibly consistent and had documented international marathon competition. So, given that he had actually placed within the top 10 (7th and 9th) of two major international marathons, then it wouldn't have been absolute "dreamin" to see him grab 2nd or 3rd in the right race. Athens was his 4th marathon.
