I personally thought it was a really great horror movie and actually achieved something unique to itself. That is; the build-up from uneasiness to frightened hopelessness to that helpless, near sucidal terror in the final scenes was seamless and absolutely brutal. It is the only movie that made me feel the same raw dread the characters did due to 1) flawless acting and 2) great camera work. Achieved more than other horror movies with no CGI, jump scares, etc.
I used to live in the town where it was filmed and that place is very creepy. Civil War history explains it, though, not the movie story. A strange part of the mid Atlantic and not far from Antietam.
