I think Jason Romero is an excellent counter-example to the Robert Young saga of deceit.
I wasn't familiar with Romero, but he's a 46-year old guy, the first legally blind runner to to the coast-to-coast thing. Here's his website, with a photo taken at the finish:
Inspiring. The true story of people who overcome heavy odds to do seemingly impossible things is always inspiring.
Grifters, on the other hand, are disappointing, once you realize what's going on.
Finding out about Romero is a huge bonus from reading this thread. And his transcon is all on Strava:
