RE: Harrisburg Marathon - Female 2nd Place "runs" 3:11
3:11 for a 49 year old female is a national sub-elite level performance. That time would have been about 5th in the 45-49 age group in Chicago this year. The masters female runners I know who picked up running later in life and really trained hard and raced on a high level are all in the 3:20-30 range for a marathon as they push 50. The only female age grouper I know who is faster than 3:11 for the marathon is a former Div I runner who ran a sub 3 marathon at a major marathon for a top 3 finish in the 45-49 age group. She got back into racing after taking time off from running to raise kids and did go from a 4+ hour marathon (completely out of shape) to sub 3. But it took her a decade of training to get there and she has a long list of 19 min 5ks, 39 min 10ks and marathons in the low 3:0X range. Women who are in their late 40s do not just suddenly come up with a 3:11.
I suspect that this person just had a bad day and turned around early to get back to her car so she could go home and go back to bed. She probably did not realize that her results would be recorded if she crossed back over the finish line or just wanted the medal. If she was really a cheater, she would have stayed around for the awards and then wrote a pissy letter to her kids' principal.
