I've read Nick Willis log from the spring and summer, and I can't find more than 2 specific 800-workouts in 14 weeks. But one thing I can find a lot of are strides faster than or at 800-pace; for example 3-6x100m or 3-6x150. And then he runs 1.45 of that....and 3.32/1500m.

So it seems like you can run a very fast 800m just of "800m-pace strides" and dropping the 800m specific work....and maybe do LT, aerobic work or hills instead of 800m workouts even in the late season. Or maybe Im very wrong :)
