I see no problem with running diagonals on the grass.

It would be worse for the knees to simply run laps on a rubberized track with rubber soles, which many people do and think nothing about it. If the diagonals were on a rubberized track or asphalt road, then maybe they would not be so good, but on grass should not be any problem. The grass does not grab the feet and therefore doesn't cause any torque to the knees.
