NERVE CELLS - IN BRAIN AND GROIN
To me two of the most interesting posts in this entire years-long thread at LetsRun are:
1. Den told us that his surgeon observed during the operation that Den's conjoined tendon had widened or splayed
compared to a normal person, and that the doctor has seen this in others suffering from sports hernia. This makes me realize how industrious is a young, healthy body like Den's in repairing itself.
2. Rem told us that Dr. Muschaweck performed an operation to 2 prior surgeries by other doctors and she removed new sprouts
from the end of the nerve, which had earlier been trimmed by a previous doctor, but was already re-sprouting, rebuilding itself
THE NERVE IN THE GROIN
Keep in mind that the entire nervous system, including not only brain cells, but also nerves throughout the body, like the nerve at the inguinal canal, is made up of linked and networked nerve CELLS, millions of them.
As explained by Nobel prize winner Eric Kandel in his book In Search of Memory
, the miracle of intelligence of the nerve cell lies not so much in the cell itself, but in the interconnection
between two cells. With one nerve cell there can be no intelligence, zero. With two cells, there can be a tiny bit of intelligence. With many nervecells, very powerful intelligence. The intelligence is stored/managed/accessed not in the cell, but in the interconnection between cells.
The powerful logic of the nervous system, the re-growing of Rem's inguinal canal nerve branch -- all that intelligence resides in the complexity of the neurotransmission BETWEEN the thousands of nerve cells right there, and in the brain, connected to them. That's why you've always heard the word synapse
. Synapses are the gaps between all the nerve cells in Rem's nerve branch. Synapses right there, and synapses (gaps) all along the nerve's route to the testicles, and also sysnapses all along the route back towards the brain.
All those millions of little gaps (synapses) operate by one nerve cell emitting squirting little signalling molecules at the receiving nerve cell, back and forth, like a tennis game. The little squirts, like a squirt gun, need a reservoir, and so each of the millions of nerves cells has to have little reservoirs of the important chemicals, neurotransmitters
, such as dopamine, melatonin, seratonin, etc.
Also of extreme importance at the synapse is that the number of emitters and the number of receptors is constantly altered according to the situation. If one takes heroin, or any euphoric, the initial high is the most intense. CONJECTURE - WILD GUESS: When an athlete who has a slightly imperfect nervous system (as a young child I occasionally slurred my words rather than pronouncing them distinctly), he can still be a good athlete. But when he introduces a chemical like caffiene or heroin into his diet, it affects neurotransmitters just enough to put the highly complex movements of the pubic joint (lower abdomen, inguinal ligament, adductors) slightly off key, like music, and then it begins to wear down, like a slightly mis-aligned tire on a car. The result is not a punctured tire from a nail, but an unevenly worn tire with a couple of bad bald spots. Sports hernia is a repetive stress injury
, as all the doctors seem to say.
This worn tire (sports hernia) can eventually heal itself, with or without surger, but not if the person keeps ingesting caffeine or heroin, like a tiny pinch of sand every day into a good engine.
