RE: Do you remember your first road race?
I was a 400/800 guy all through high school and I had never run a race longer than the 800. About a week after my last meet in my senior year of high school, there was a 3.8 mile race in my town as part of the whole memorial day celebration. I was still in decent shape, so I decided to jump in the race.

The start felt pretty easy, since I was used to getting out in a near sprint for the 800. That was about the only part that was easy. About half way through, my legs were just burning. I had never even done a tempo run or repeats longer than 400s at this point in my running career. My longest distance run ever had been one hour.

I nearly cried when I came around a turn and saw a quarter mile long hill right in front of me. When I finished, I decided that I'd never race anything longer than an 800 again, but for some reason, I found myself running more and more distance races.
