YES. The best American milers of my lifetime have done long runs as far as I know. That would be Ryun, Liqouri and Scott. I recall Scott being quoted in Track and Field News not too long ago as saying that the problem with American miling today is that runners have gotten away from doing a Lydiard style build up.
