Custom shoes and prototypes have been around in track and field since the very beginning. Ever heard of Bill Bowerman? Or anyone who made shoes before him? The IAAF rule as written is stupid and literally only Rojo cares about it.
Could people buy Alison Felix’s spikes from Rio? Or Usain Bolt’s? Johnson’s golden shoes? Carl Lewis crazy Mizuno’s with the ultra light weight plastic spikes that only last one race?
Generally, Nike (at least) does make their prototype elite racing shoes and spikes available to the public after the Olympics. And I’m pretty sure you’ll see them offer their Olympic road race shoes to anyone in the Olympics who wants to wear them if the shoes really are that good.
And for those of you going on about the carbon fiber plate in the Nike’s - that’s not the magic. It’s the foam.
