All of which is a long way of pointing out that the Africans have been doping like crazy while the Japanese have not.The Overexplainer wrote:
I know that the NR is 2:06:16. I said that they should have been able to advance their average level by 4:00 in 40 years. They have not even advanced their NR by 3:00 in 40 years. I understand their depth (I mentioned how GREAT they are) and I understand that they have improved. But when you look at how far the new drugs (since 1990 - so hardly new now) have taken the Africans in 40 yrs you would think that the Japanese would have made a similar leap.
I thought I wrote it out very explicitly, but there is always one dullard that cannot follow.
I'll write it differently (the U.S. News and World Report version for you):
How many sub-2:10 Africans were there in 1980? (37 yrs ago) Answer: NONE.
How many sub-2:05:00 Africans are there NOW? I see 33.
How many sub-2:10 Japanese were there in 1980? Answer: Just one, but there was a handful at 2:10-2:11 also (a stronger contingent than the Africans at the time)

How many sub-2:05 NOW? NONE for all time.
The Japanese are stuck in traditional training methods. The africans have changed how they are training & racing. They train to be comfortable at 2:06-2:08 pace and be able to race at 2:04-2:05 pace. Americans are no better their backwards approach to racing at faster paces.
