I know that there are/were many complicating factors that did/would influence a decision like this. I know that the KHSAA was able to determine team state champions by using scores earned at the point of suspension but there seems to be no consideration that the 4x400m is a distinct event, with a distinct state championship. That event and the athletes contesting it are competing for a state championship, not just in team track and field, but in the 4x400m relay.
Just like each weight class in wrestling gives a distinct championship, or singles/doubles in tennis, or obviously each distinct event in swimming. These single events all contribute to the overall team championship, but are each distinct State Championships on their own.
There are many options as to how, when, and where to contest the 4x400m State Championship, none would be perfect. Likely, none would garner full attendance. But a relay team of 4 boys and a relay team of 4 girls would be crowned 4x400m State Champions, and perhaps state record holders. These are distinctions that I, and likely all of us, hold in incredibly high regard and ones that should not be withheld.
