What do we know about meldonium (drug Aregawi was busted for)?

rekrunner

I like the question of the thread -- "what do we KNOW about meldonium?"Do we reasonably know it is performance enhancing? It looks like WADA put it on the list just because a lot of athletes were known to take it, and they believed it was for performance enhancing effects. Maybe there is more, but from the few words I've seen in the news articles, that hardly seems like they had a valid reason, stronger than "rumours of widespread abuse" to ban it.What if we do not see any drop in performances? Will anyone take back their words? Is this a drug known to improve performance? Or is it in a category like thyroid medication, or l-carnitine, where the enhancement effects are unproven, and it will generate a lot of discussion for nothing?

This drug finally banned! wrote:

It will be interesting to see if there is a drop off in performances in the Olympics now that this drug has finally been banned. Long delay by the governing associations to ban it, given the rumored widespread abuse by athletes over the last several years.
