I have explained it simply. No need for long posts. When you stop enjoying it, you stop training properly.
What causes the lack of enjoyment? Too much pressure, much of which is self imposed, but also from sponsors and public expectation.
Perhaps the imprisonment of the drug testing program doesn't help either. Elite athletes have to be available always for testing and that is a big worry for those tested the most.
Wrong. Any competitive runner will still get plenty of enjoyment from running and training if they're doing well. Hall would still get enjoyment from running 2:06 to 2:10.
And again, your simplistic explanation doesn't even begin to explain the steep dropoff these people experience. Losing a step or two is one thing; reaching a point where you can barely trudge along is completely different.
