His resume? Of coaching the greatest HS boys xc team ever? I think he's certainly qualified and if he wants to do college, he needs a college jobs as so many college ADs . They think "Only D1" when they don't realize a track coach who understands running should excel at any level and with any sex - HS, college, pro, male or female.
Now Notre Dame doesn't pay well. But to me this makes A LOT of sense if Brosnan wants to get into college. Now, he may not want into college and may be thinking, "My god if adidas is dropping like well north of $500,000 on two runners who can't even make the US 1500 final (Kessler/Hunter), why dont they pay me $150k a year to coach the next group of HSers they have go pro?"
