If so I am less impressed. I could probably go a long time without speaking if I were still allowed to communicate via text messages and letsrun.com.

.
Hell yeah
I am friends with such a Monk who took those vows . He served the ministry for thirty years in France .
He was allowed to speak two words every ten years to the head Monk .
After his first ten years he approached the head Monk and was granted his two words .
He said , “Food cold “.
Head Monk nods .
And the young monk returns to his vocation.
Ten years later the now not so young Monk approaches the head Monk and is granted his two words .
He states, “Bed hard .”
And he returns to his vocation.
Now another ten years pass and now the middle aged Monk approaches the head Monk with his two words.
After thirty years he states to the head Monk ,
“I quit . “
To which the head Monk replies ,” Well we all saw that coming. You’ve done nothing but cried and complained since you got here !”
What is a vow of silence about? A vow is supposed to be to do something really good. Nobody cares if you're absolutely silent for a long time. There is no virtue in that.
Jamin posts here all the time. To go so long without female contact, I can only imagine he is a sworn man of god

So certain are you.

A lot of these types of idea either go against what God presumably actually wants or directly contradict the teachings of religious texts.
God gave us the ability to speak. If he's really as smart as his people claim, he didn't do that accidentally. He presumably gave us the ability to speak because he wants us to use that ability. His closest followers ignore this and decide not to speak to show their devotion.
God tells us to go forth and multiply as one of his very first instructions in the whole story book. Priests read this and say "hmm...seems like God wants us to be celibate!"

That's because he exists only in their mind, and it's not the same one that exists only in your mind. In the end, it's just people doing what they think they should.
Maybe these monks got told to shut up a lot, or their mouths got them into trouble constantly, so they figured it was the way to go.
Made me chuckle. Thanks.

If you, jamin, Hardloper and Greg were silent it would be something really good.
Like Heavenly.
I say this as an Atheist wrote:

That's not a nice thing to say. Try to control your hate.

I don't really agree with Buddhist philosophy so no thanks

Not all monks are buddhist. You should know this.
There is a lot of ignorance about monastic orders on this thread. Letsrun posters have a lot in common with monks actually. Oh, sorry, that's monkeys.
