I disagree. His 5,000m pace is 8:32. If he cannot run his 5,000m pace for 2/3 of the race that would not be a good sign. His 12x400 workout if actually done at his current 3k fitness, and adjusted for conditions as Tinman says that your should do (but his athletes often do not do) would indicate much faster than 8:40. This time trial will be a good indicator if that 12x400 workout was done correctly.
