They should limit the field to just one guy—an elite American distance runner who is also a medical professional.

Bob Kempainen, come out of retirement!

This is not a great idea. Have a very watered down field with the winner being the weakest winner of the event in decades? No thanks. Flying 10-20 guys over isn’t a big deal, I support the elite only race though.
2018 will forever have an asterisk. People will forever ask why 2018 was 10 minutes slower for the winners than any other year. We don’t need another fake champ.
What a bad take on 2018. An asterisk for you, sure, but it's going to be remembered with other historic editions of the race. It was a war of attrition.
If people ask about the time, use it as an opportunity to tell them what the conditions were like. Nobody was a fake champion that day.

Very well said.

It was an actual race, not a time trial. Real racers thrived that day. You saw who has the balls to withstand the elements. Nothing better than watching Kirui running a seven minute mile down Boylston. Or Desi cross the finish line. Or Rupp, in full douche mode with the mask, quit. Or the hobby joggers in their ponchos turned parachutes. That was the best Boston ever.
4th idea: 2020 Boston Marathon, Jock Semple Edition
Neither females nor males are allowed to race, and anyone running on the course gets groped and shoved by curmudgeonly old men.

That is still my marathon PR, and I'm quite proud of the fact that, of all days, it was that day! Even when I best that time one day, Boston 2018 will go down as the best race of my life!
Considering that no one as a general fan or in the media in the USA cares about the first 10 Kenyans across the line, WHY NOT make it an all USA elite affair?

Fans of the sport care.
“Too soon to be flying across oceans and continents”. So shouldn’t that exclude elites who live on the west coast? And why exclude foreign nationals who live on the east coast?
What's the cutoff to be considered "elite"?
Like another poster said, are we basically just talking another Olympic Trials here, except for Boston?
I do like what another poster said...They should make it like a bicycle time trial.
Start every competitor 30 seconds apart.
Have splits at the 5k every point until Mile 18 and then do it every mile until the finish
Let coaches on bicycles ride next to them for 200 meters after the splits . The coaches can have an ipad attached or similar and can give their runner splits. (Or have giant screens for the runners). If you are with your runner outside of that 200m zone, you're runner is DQ'd (They have something similar to this at Western States 100 where you can't take aid from your crew outside of the designated aid station zones).
It would FORCE the runners to race and not just "sit and kick"
Cutoff for a Boston comp'd entry is the trials standard (2:19/2:45).
The rest of your post is too ridiculous to comment on.
Enough is enough. The Boston Marathon should not happen this year. People need to accept it and get over it.

Is it though?
So basically a time trial by Rupp? Because he is the only American “elite”
The main problem is that NY pays a lot in appearance fees for the top US runners. So, a September version of Boston as a US championship would likely be closer to CIM in terms of talent as NY would poach off much of the top talent. Even if Boston were to be able to increase money to US runners from what they save on paying international runners, US runners would still be wary of saying no to NY.
Absent a sudden reversal in how the US handles the corona virus, I do not seen either event happening. Infection levels are moving in the right direction in the N.E., but there isn't the kind of medical infrastructure to test and trace to keep the virus down to levels that would allow mass participation events.
If the 3 ideas this is the best one. Let only American Elites run the race.
First Reavis is a known idiot.
second - Boston 2020 isn't happening.
third- you can't require American runners to participate
Why repeat the American-only O. Trials a few months later? It was exciting because the Olympic Team was at stake. A second time it would be as flat as cola opened and left out overnight. Or as Karl Marx said, history repeats, first time as tragedy, second time as farce.
You idiots that bemoan "sit and kick" races and try to construct elaborate ways for runners to avoid racing each other are laughably out of touch.
