Serious post: I've always lived in cities. My parents were poor and always rented small apartments.
For years I kinda coulda woulda buy a house, but I have zero knowledge in the matter and zero role model.
After Covid-19 I have finally decided that I am buying a house.
We are currently renting in a very expensive city and I am ready to move far away from it in order to have a house and a big yard.
TIMETABLE
The contract with my tenant runs until Sept. 1, and I have to let him know by July 1st that I want to leave.
In order to have a house by then, if I start my search now, is this feasible?
BUDGET
My wife and I make 160K/year combined.
Our old beat-up car is paid for. Student loans are paid as well. No other loans.
We both have credit card debt though.
We both have a 401k, 3-month cash savings in case of an emergency, some stocks.
WORK/TELEWORK
My wife can work remote and I'm going to propose teleworking for my company half of the time (1 week at the office, 1 week WFH) so that I can look at houses within 2 hours of my office.
Potentially I can have access to a place about 1 hour commute from my office (my wife's aunt place), so I think I could live there during the week at work, then live in our new house and work from there the rest of the time.
POTENTIAL AREA
My wife and I both like a quiet country area about 1.5h/2hours from the city where we have some relatives and a friend already there. Good school district, quiet, safe. I looked online on Zillow and Realtor.com and found 3 houses that we both like. The most expensive is the one we like the most at 750K. A dream house, really, especially with our kids. Beautiful house, a pool, a big yard, and a small 1BR cottage we could rent out, possibly?
Am I crazy to even think that's feasible???
MORTGAGE
??
Which bank should I call, and what rate can I expect? Should I use a broker?
Anything you can share with me to guide me in this journey is much appreciated.
